Jake, when I heard her soft cries my eyes immediately snapped open. My mind raced as I jolted awake throwing off the light wool blanket Billy had wrapped around me hours ago and sitting up alertly. I must have fallen asleep; the TV was on casting a bright blue glow around the room. It was one of those light night talk shows. I heard the thunderous applause and saw the overjoyed faces. I grabbed the remote and the TV flickered off. I looked around, the kitchen was dark, it must have been late
at least one in the morning, the sky was dark
but the moon was shining, filtering through a window that looked out on the driveway
